DE LA MARE, Walter.
Memoirs of a Midget.
First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author (as “Jack”) and additionally signed by his daughter to “Harry & Margaret, with their love, from Florence & Jack, 18. vii. 21”, the recipients being Sir Henry Newbolt and his wife, a highly significant association: after eighteen years working in the statistics department at Anglo-American Oil, De La Mare’s verse finally attracted the “eager championship” of Newbolt, who secured him a royal bounty grant of £200 which allowed him to leave his day-job and devote himself to writing full-time (ODNB). De La Mare’s daughter, Florence, drew the image found on p. 2, which in this copy bears her inked initials “F. d l M”. Memoirs of a Midget won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for the year 1921.
