Peeling the Onion.
Translated from the German by Michael Henry Hein.
First English language edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the title page, “For Norman Mailer, with many thanks, Günter Grass”. Grass and Mailer appeared together at “The 20th Century on Trial”, an event in 2007 in which they were both interviewed on stage by Andrew O’Hagan. Peeling the Onion is a biography of Grass’s early life, from his childhood up to his marriage, and it includes information about his service in the Waffen-SS, a long-hidden fact which caused controversy when it was revealed just prior to publication.
