First edition, first printing. Signed by the author and warmly inscribed by the illustrator for Margaret Mary Kimmel, ” For Maggie Kimmel-Let’s pretend it’s a WELSH DRAGON! With much love from A FAN, Trina Schart Hyman 1985.” Kimmel was a professor emerita in the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. She has served on many important library councils including, Carnegie 100 (an advisory group to the Carnegie Institute), the board of directors of the Children’s Council of Western Pennsylvania, the advisory board of Beginning with Books, the board of trustees for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (member of the Executive Committee and Chair of Automation Committee), the United States National Section of the International Board of Books for Young People (as past president), the American Library Association Council (as member, chair of the Committee on Accreditation, chair of the Office of Library Personnel Advisory Committee, and chair of the Committee on Education), the Association of Library Service to Children (as past president, chair of the Committee on Accreditation, chair of the Office of Library Personnel Advisory Committee, and chair of the Committee on Education), and the board of directors of the Association for Library and Information Science Education. She has also sat on a number of Newbery Award committees. This adapted tale from Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene, won the 1985 Calecott Medal. distinguishing it as one of the best picture books of the year. A wonderful association copy.

Octavo. Original tan boards, red cloth backstrip, blue endpapers. With the dust jacket. Full-page colour illustrations by Hyman throughout. Spine slightly cocked, spine ends lightly rubbed. An excellent copy in a bright jacket with lightly nicked and creased extremities, light chipping to spine ends and corners.
