The Book and the Brotherhood.
First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, “For Harry, with much love, Iris,” and additionally signed in full by the author. The recipient was the artist Harry Weinberger (1924–2009), a close friend of Iris Murdoch, who had painted her portrait. Murdoch wrote several catalogue introductions to his work, and found in his paintings a “charged, numinous atmosphere, the awkward mystery of space and the spiritual significance of colour”. Murdoch spent a portion of her Booker Prize on his paintings.
