First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “For Charles and Pamela Snow, in gratitude and admiration, George Steiner (March 16, 1961)”. The recipients were the novelist and physicist C. P. Snow and his wife. Snow once described the literary critic Steiner as “a latter-day Edmund Wilson, at least as gifted and much more learned… His own existence is a cultural phenomenon in which we can take a decent pride”.

Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine gilt, initials to upper board in blind. With the dust jacket. Bookplate. An excellent copy in the jacket that is rubbed and creased, with some short closed tears and a little abrasion to the upper panel.
