The present State of the Arts in England.
By M. Rouquet, Mamber of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture; Who resided Thirty Years in this Kingdom.
First English edition, originally published in French in 1754, written by the Swiss born artist Jean André Rouquet, friend of Hogarth and David Garrick, who lived in London between 1726 and 1750. A brief preliminary discourse is followed by reviews of the various arts in England, not only dealing with painting, but with sculpture, woodcarving, silk manufacture, engraving, printing, stonecarving, porcelaine, and further with theatrical declamation, music, the decoration of shops and the sale of pictures. Much of the content of his work would have been of interest to Smith. The present volume was listed in the 1781 inventory of Smith’s library (SC 25), but has been unlocated for many years.
Octavo (171 106 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco label, skilfully rebacked and recornered. From the library of Adam Smith, with his distinctive book label to the front pastedown. Board edges a little darkened, some signs of wear. First and last leaves a little browned from the leather turn ins, the front free endpaper renewed. A very good copy.
