DE LA MARE, Walter.
First edition, first impression, second issue. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to “H. N., from W. dl M, October 1910” on the front free endpaper. The recipient was Sir Henry Newbolt, a highly significant association: after eighteen years working in the statistics department at Anglo-American Oil, De La Mare’s verse eventually attracted the “eager championship” of Sir Henry, who secured him a royal bounty grant of £200 in 1908, allowing him to leave his day-job and devote himself to writing full-time; The Return was De La Mare’s first novel following his stroke of fortune (ODNB). The first issue appeared without the four pages of publisher’s advertisements to the rear.
