First edition of the English translation of Schiller’s adaptation of the Turandot story. Inscribed on the front free endpaper “To Mrs. Julia W. Davis from her admiring acquaintance Mary Cowden Clarke, Munich – September 1879”. Clarke was the daughter Mary Sabilla Novello, the drama’s translator, and herself a literary scholar and theatre enthusiast.
