First and only edition, extremely uncommon, just four copies on OCLC: BL, London Library, and universities of Minnesota and Arizona. Substantial account of service in the Java expedition, 1811, First Anglo-Burmese War, Second Anglo-Sikh War, and Indian mutiny. Steel became commanding officer of the 2nd Bengal Europeans (later Munster fusiliers) and led them in the Punjab during 1848-9 at the battles of Chillianwalla and Goojerat. This copy inscribed by the author to W. N. Thompson and numbered 48 on the half-title (though the size of the edition is nowhere mentioned). With a letter of presentation tipped-in, in which Steel remarks that “This is not a very satisfactory performance, but as it is not for sale it escapes criticism. It is not an easy thing to start a new trade at the age of 70.”

Octavo. Original blue diced cloth, leather title label to the spine. Portrait frontispiece and 5 other plates, 3 plans, one full-page facsimile, facsimile signature to the text. Cloth mottled, spine sunned, light toning, some foxing, very good.
