First edition. Uncommon. Artie Shaw’s copy inscribed to him by the editor; “To Art Shaw with finest appreciation for the man and the musician. Paul Eduard Miller.” In the biographies section Shaw is described as “among the greatest clarinet soloists.” Includes a potted history of jazz, Milestones; a listing for a Representative Record Library; valuations of collectable records, and an early Vocabulary of Swing Terms. Miller was a journalist and contributing editor to Down Beat in the 30s, went on to edit Esquire’s influential Year Book series. His archive is at the Columbia College Chicago Center for Black Music Research.

Octavo. Original red cloth lettered in black to the spine and upper board. Spine a touch sunned, slightly frayed head and tail, little play to the front hinge, endpapers toned and somewhat browned in the gutters, but a very good copy.
