Ownership inscription of Thomas “Fats” Waller to the upper wrap. Waller impressed early on with his keyboard skills, playing alongside his mother in the church where his father was a preacher from the age of 10, and accompanying the movies on the organ at the Lincoln Theater, Harlem, when just 14. He later became a pupil of the stride legend James P. Johnson, and also received classical tuition from Leopold Godowsky, his friend George Gershwin’s sister’s father-in-law, but his reputation rests upon his natural pianistic ability and his outrageous swing. However, like so many jazz musicians he sought “a more serious scope for his music” (Pollack, George Gershwin), and it is unsurprising to find his signature attached to this Grieg piano score. In fact, in Viper’s Drag, his tea-tinged stride extravaganza from 1934, he quotes the theme from Grieg’s The Hall of the Mountain King in the left hand. On the lower wrap Fats has pencilled the Broadway address of Edward I. Brown, the “rep” for the Robert Morton Organ Co.
