First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “For – Peggy and Lew affectionately from Aaron. La Habana Dec 1941”. Peggy and Lew Riley were friends of Copland’s who lived in Cuba and whom he visited during his extensive travels through South America, noting in a letter (now held by the US Library of Congress) that during one trip in 1947 they met up with him in Bogotá and “made everything easy for me”.

Octavo. Original cream and tan-flecked cloth, titles to spine and upper board in black. With the dust jacket. Bookseller’s ticket to front pastedown. Spine slightly rolled, cloth a little tanned, front free endpaper slightly loose at the top, contents toned. An excellent copy in the tanned and creased jacket with chips from the head of the spine panel and the folds, and the lower flap separated but retained.
