RUGGLES, J., Major-General.
Recollections of a Lucknow Veteran 1845-1876.
First edition of this uncommon memoir. “Ruggles wrote this some 60 years after the Mutiny and relies on Martin Gubbins’s work An Account of the Mutinies in Oude together with Ruggles’s own notes. When the book was written there were still at least 25 survivors at the Lucknow Dinner” (Sorsky). Ruggles served with the 19th Punjabis, originally raised during the Indian Mutiny in 1857 as the 7th regiment of Punjab Infantry, and saw service in North India and the Bhutan War (1864-65), all related in his lively narrative.
Octavo. Original khaki cloth with dark blue flash across the front board, title gilt to spine. Binding skilfully refurbished, some foxing. A very good copy.
