This copy inscribed, “To Miss Edith Langridge with love from Hermione Cunningham, March 20, 1925.” Cunningham went to India in 1866 and became Government Advocate and Legal Adviser to the Government of the Punjab, in 1872 he was appointed Advocate-General in Madras, becoming Judge to the High Court in Bengal in 1878. From 1878-9 he was Secretary of the Indian Famine Commission. Also an author, two of Cunningham’s novels “The Chronicles of Dustypore (1875) and The Coeruleans: a Vacation Idyll (1887), offer shrewd portraits of Anglo-Indian society” (ODNB).
