SMITH, Edward E.
The Skylark of Space.
In collaboration with Mrs Lee Hawkins Garby. Illustrated by O. G. Estees Jr.
First illustrated edition of Smith science fiction story that first appeared in the magazine Amazing Stories (1928, vol. 3, no. 5), and then in a plain unillustrated edition in 1946. This copy has a fantastic association double-inscription from both the illustrator, “11.18.84 – with sincerest respect & love, Oscar G. Estees”, and the publisher, “To Jerry Weinst [sic], Donald M. Grant”. Jerry Weist was a pioneering fan, collector and bibliographer of science fiction, who in 1974 opened one of the first speciality comic stories in North America, “The Million Year Picnic”, and, after years of retail, convinced Sotheby’s in 1991 to mount the first major Comic Book and Comic Art auction. He served as Sotheby’s comics consultant from 1990-2001, launching the first world-class market auctions in the genre.
