Untitled Film Stills
With an Essay by Arthur C. Danto.
First edition, first printing. Signed on the title page by Sherman. Sherman’s first book publication, containing 40 of the original 69 self portraits portraying herself as publicity shots for film actresses. The entire series was purchased by MoMA in 1995. “Untitled Film Stills struck an extraordinary cultural chord, touching every salient point on the postmodernist wish list. Sherman’s pictures of female characters in stereotypical movie situations – the sexy librarian, the woman in jeopardy, the adulterous housewife, and so on – gave not only feminist commentators, but also any kind of media theorist, plenty to write about… What sometimes gets forgotten in the fog of analysis that surrounds Untitled Film Stills is that they are good photographs, put together with a rare combination of calculation and spontaneity, of knowingness and naivety” (Parr & Badger).
