First American edition of Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments, originally published in London in 1759, the present edition based on the 1809 edition published in Edinburgh by R. Chapman.
Octavo (218 130 mm), pp. viii, 598 + final advertisement leaf. Contemporary tree sheep, flat spine ruled gilt in compartments, morocco label. Contemporary ownership inscription of one J. M. Downell to the front pastedown. Front joint rubbed and with a short crack at the head, but still strong, extremities lightly worn with a little surface abrasion. Internally browned throughout as usual, the text still totally legible, withal a very fine copy.
