[TUCHMAN, Barbara, née] WERTHEIM, Barbara.
The Lost British Policy.
Britain and Spain since 1700. With an introduction by Philip Guedalla.
First and only edition, first impression, of Tuchman’s first book, written while she was reporting on the Spanish Civil War for The Nation; today highly uncommon in commerce in this condition, and far from widespread institutionally, with just ten copies in libraries outside the United Kingdom, of which three in the US. Wertheim married medical professor Lester R. Tuchman in 1940, taking his surname. Twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize, for The Guns of August (1963) and Stilwell and the American Experience in China (1972), she died in 1989.

Octavo. Original white card wraps printed in blue and black, illustrated endpapers. Housed in a custom blue cloth solander box. Wraps creased on spine and slightly rubbed and marked overall, edges toned, light foxing to prelims, but a very good and notably tight copy of a fragile publication.
