First editions, limited issue. A complete set of the Surrealist-inflected, avant-garde Parisian art and literary journal, issued between 25 May 1929 and 10 June 1931. Each volume is numbered: the first four volumes were printed in an edition of 3,000 copies, volumes 5 to 7 one of 2,000 copies, and volume 8 was one of 1,700 copies. Established by Pierre Lévy, founder of Éditions du Carrefour, Bifur provided a forum for many of the Surrealists who had been alienated from Breton’s group. In Breton’s Second Surrealist Manifesto (1929) he waspishly described Bifur as a “remarkable repository for garbage”. It features contributions in French from: Tristan Tzara, André Malraux, Jacques Prévert, Franz Kafka, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Langston Hughes, Maurice Tabard, André Kerstsz, László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, Claude Cahun, Giorgio De Chirico, Lilika Nacos, Francis Picabia, Martin-Luis Guzman, Rene Daumal, Ramon Gomez De La Serna, Jean Giono, William Carlos Williams, Michel Leiris, Pierre MacOrlan, Boris Pilniak, Jean Sylviere, Pierre Minet, Nathan Altman, Robert Desnos, Gabriel Bounoure, and Caradoc Evans. The reproductions in heliogravure include works by Andre Masson, De Chirico, De La Serna, Paul Klee, Man Ray, and Germaine Krull.

8 volumes, large octavo. Original white, pale yellow or grey wrappers, titles to spines and front covers black, multicoloured motif to front covers. With glassine dust jackets. 130 black and white heliogravures. Vol. I with vertical crease to fore-edge of front wrapper, outer tip of lower cover gently creased, vol. III wrapper partially split at head of spine, vol. IV a little bowed, vol. VI minor loss to foot of spine panel, short tears to foot of front and rear panels at hinges, creasing to lower panel, and light marks to covers, vol. VII wrapper separated from text block at spine, closed tear at spine-folds, vol. VIII tear at foot of rear panel, light marks to covers. Occasional mild foxing to some leaves in all volumes. A very good set.
