First edition, early printing. Presentation copy signed by the author to Julia Carter and with an original drawing on verso of front free endpaper. Julia F. Carter was the first full time children’s librarian at the New York Public Library. Miss Carter was also the first national president of the Division of Library Work with Children and Young People of the American Library Association. She presented the first ever Caldecott Medal in 1938, an award The Egg Tree won in 1951.

Quarto. Original blue-green linen, titles to spine and front board in black. With the pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by the author. Endpapers lightly tanned, mild foxing to prelims. An excellent copy in a bright jacket with some very light foxing to flaps and rear panel, slightly nicked and creased extremities, a couple of small chips to head of spine and lower rear panel, and a tear across the front panel and front flap repaired with tape to verso. Partial Caldecott Medal sticker to front panel of dust jacket.
