First Rackham edition, limited issue, number 214 of 1,130 copies. Unusually for Rackham, he did not sign this edition, as he was out of the country while it was in preparation. This copy however contains an autograph letter signed from Rackham laid in, reading “Houghton House / Houghton / Arundel / 12 Oct. 23 / Dear Sir / In reply to your letter of 10th, no books illustrated by me are being published this year. / Yours sincerely / Arthur Rackham”. Rackham had a 3 year hiatus between 1922 (Hawthorn’s Wonder Book and Morley’s Where the Blue Begins) and 1925 (Margery Williams Bianco’s Poor Cecco).

Octavo. Original cream cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, illustration of the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle to front board in gilt, publisher’s device in blind to the rear board, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 12 plates, black and white illustrations throughout the text. Tiny nicks to corners, toning to endpapers, and very faint occasional spotting within, but a really lovely copy in excellent condition.
