First edition, first impression, uncommon. A delightful 1920s children’s book, with illustrations by Gladys Peto (1890-1977), who “also designed pottery, textiles, posters and costumes; and in the 1920s and early ’30s, as The Times reports, it was the ‘in’ thing to wear a Gladys Peto dress” (Alan Horne, The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators, p. 349).

Large square octavo. Original orange cloth spine lettered in black, black paper boards lettered in orange and with a mounted colour illustration. Colour frontispiece, 7 colour plates, decorated title page, black & white illustrations throughout, by Gladys Peto. Spine lightly soiled, wear to a couple of corners, front hinge shaken, scattered foxing, neat presentation inscription on front free endpaper.
