First edition, first printing. A story set in the Netherlands of a young boy who is hopeful of winning the big ice skating race held annually. The story introduced Americans to the sport of speed skating and to this day Hans Brinker is considered to be the prototypical speed skater. This story also popularised the folk tale of the little Dutch boy who plugged a dike with his finger.

Octavo. Original blue cloth boards, gilt title to spine, gilt publisher’s initials to front board, blind rule boarder to covers, yellow endpapers. Four full page illustrations by F. O. C. Darley and Thomas Nast. Occasional spotting to pages, bookplate to front paste down, page 129 with small paper repair, mild bumping to ends of spine and corners, modest wear to extremities, a very good copy.

Bibliography: Blanck, Peter Parley to Penrod, p.25
