First UK edition, first issue with the price facing the half title altered in ink; originally published in the US five days earlier. An attractive example of the original cloth.
Octavo. Original blue morocco-grain cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt, large pictorial block of “Uma” from The Beach of Falesa to front board gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, floral endpapers. Frontispiece with tissue guard, colour sketch map, 26 plates. With the 16 pages of publisher’s advertisements to rear (dated “7 G-3.93” as usual, “7 G-9.92” noted in the very earliest copies). Spine rolled, tips and spine-ends lightly bumped and rubbed, contents clean. An excellent copy.
