[Swiss Family Robinson.] The Family Robinson Crusoe:
or, Journal of a father shipwrecked, with his wife and children, on an uninhabited island. Translated from the German of M. Wiss.
First complete edition in English of the “Swiss Family Robinson,” the first two volumes consisting of a re-issue of Godwin’s 1814 edition with a cancel title page, along with the first appearance of Wyss’s continuation, as announced at the end of the first volume. Translated from Baroness Montolieu’s 1813 French adaptation, although the titles states it was translated from the German. The Swiss Family Robinson was originally published in German under the title Der Schweizerische Robinson in 1812.
3 volumes in two, duodecimo (168 x 104 mm). Contemporary brown half calf, dark green morocco labels, smooth spines ruled in gilt and with blind tools, marbled boards, all edges speckled red. Engraved frontispieces, including folding map in second volume, 5 engraved plates by Springsguth or J. Dadley after H. Courbold, printed note promising the continuation at end of first volume. Extremities worn, some minor soiling and spotting, neatly repaired small tear in lower margin of frontispiece and first seven leaves, also affecting the following eight leaves, but to a much lesser extent, occasional sporadic foxing. An excellent set with fresh contents.
