First edition, first printing, one of the first twelve books in the Little Golden Books series, the complete first set as issued simultaneously on 1 October 1942. The Little Golden Books, which sold for 25¢, were published by Simon and Schuster in cooperation with the Artist and Writers Guild, Inc. headed by Georges Duplaix, who had the original idea for the series. Dr. Mary Reed, a professor at the Teachers College of Columbia University, served as editor of the series. The Poky Little Puppy remains one of the most popular children’s books in America, as of 2001 it had sold nearly 15 million copies.

Square octavo. Original blue-cloth backed printed pictorial boards, decorative pastedown. With the dust jacket. All illustrated throughout by Gustaf Tenggren. Wear to cloth of spine, lower spine end with cloth glued down, mild rubbing to corners, toning and occasional spotting to pages in the dust jacket with the original price of 25¢ still present, chipping to ends of spine, small chip to lower front edge and front flap fold, creasing and closed tear to rear panel with tape at verso. A very good copy.
