First edition of the author’s landmark second book, written while rationing was still in force. David (1913–1992) taught herself Mediterranean-style cooking while living abroad during the early 1940s, and in 1949 she began writing a food column for Harper’s Bazaar. Her first book was published to wide acclaim the following year, and she is now recognised for her profound influence on British culinary culture.

Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to spine gilt on brown ground. With the John Minton dust jacket. Frontispiece, vignette title and illustrations throughout by John Minton. Board edges a little toned, minor foxing to edges; a good copy in the toned jacket with some loss to spine ends, shallow chip to head of front panel, and ragged extremities.
