First edition in book form, first impression. The Hound was Sherlock Holmes “comeback” novel after his shocking demise on the Reichenbach Falls stunned his loyal Victorian readership. When first serialised in the Strand Magazine in 1901 it was a feverish success, with queues at the publisher’s office and throughout the country.
Octavo. Original red cloth, spine gilt lettered and decorated, front cover gilt lettered and decorated and with hound in black silhouette. Housed in a custom black cloth slipcase. Frontispiece and 15 plates by Sidney Paget. Spine panel faded, spine cracked but holding, spine ends a little rubbed and frayed, some minor bumps to boards and a little faint foxing to contents. A very good, bright copy.
