Scarce early edition, apparently a reissue of the 1741 first edition with a new title page. Not listed in Goldsmiths’ nor Kress and OCLC records copies at the Österreich Bibliothek, Erlangen, Munich and Strasbourg only. This is Die göttliche Ordnung is Sussmilch’s pioneering and seminal work in demography and the history of population statistics. “He sought to demonstrate through a careful examination of empirical data, that the laws governing humanity were as formal and undeniable as those of empirical data. Thus, three major currents of thought of 18th century Europe were combined in the minister’s work: Lutheran faith coloured by pietism, Anglo-Dutch physio-theology born of Newtonian philosophy and demographic statistics” (Heyde & Seneta, Statisticians of the Centuries, 2001, p. 74.)
Octavo (170 x 103 mm). Contemporary half vellum, marbled paper sides, red speckled edges. 3 folding letterpress tables of statistics. Some loss of vellum from spine, one corner worn, contemporary manuscript annotation to title page, general light browning, closed tear at foot of leaf X3. A good sound copy.
