Rare first edition in French of Steuart’s Inquiry into the principles of political economy, the translation prepared by Étienne de Sénovert upon the request of Alexandre Vandermonde. Vandermonde, a strong supporter of the Revolution, member of the Académie des Sciences and teacher in political economy at the newly created École Normale, saw that Steuart’s work made points not focused on in Adam Smith’s more widely translated works.

5 volumes, octavo (197 121 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, blind rule border to covers, spines decorated gilt in compartments, red and green labels, marbled endpapers. Acquisition note dated 1791 to the free endpaper of volume 1. Two corners very lightly rubbed, a superb copy, in excellent condition.

Bibliography: Kress S.5268; not in Einaudi, Goldsmiths' or Mattioli.
