STOCKING, George Ward.
The Oil Industry and the Competitive System,
a Study in Waste.
First edition, first printing. An important work by the American pioneer of industrial organisation, George W. Stocking (1892-1975), and the book that made his reputation. Stocking’s book was in fact his dissertation for the University of Texas at Austin which “won the Hart, Schaffner, and Marx prize for the best study in economics, giving Stocking one thousand dollars and subsidized publication by Houghton and Mifflin” (Olien, Oil & Ideology: The Cultural Creation of the American Petroleum Industry, University of North Carolina 2000, p. 285). A particularly nice copy with the dust jacket.
