First Edition of this classic epistolary collection. Chesterfield’s letters to his natural son were written on an almost daily basis from 1737 onward and were designed for the education of the young Stanhope. They give sensible advice on conduct and manners and are replete with examples of Chesterfield’s celebrated wit.
2 volumes, quarto (289 225 mm). Rebound to style in English panelled calf, red morocco labels, double gilt rules to spines and dated at foot. Engraved portrait frontispiece. Small circular coronet inkstamps to titles, ownership inscriptions to initial blank, one German and dated 1836. Short marginal tear at head of quire B in vol. I not affecting text. A good clean copy.
