First edition, second issue (without the half-title), of Beerbohm’s second book, a collection of magazine pieces. “By the time Max had married, retired from London, and settled in Italy, his position as one of England’s foremost essayists was firmly in place. As early as 1898 Shaw had, famously, pronounced Max ‘incomparable'” (ODNB).

Small square octavo. Original green pebble-grain cloth, paper spine label printed in black, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Housed in a custom green morocco-backed slipcase and matching chemise. Bookplate of noted collector John Quinn to front pastedown. Light offsetting to front free endpaper from bookplate. An excellent copy.
