First edition in the original monthly parts. Our Mess was comprised of two different novels, with Jack Hinton, the Guardsman running in numbers I–XIII, and Tom Burke of Ours in XIV–XXXV. This set includes the first XIII numbers, being the complete novel Jack Hinton, the Guardsman, but not including any parts of Tom Burke.

13 numbers in 12 monthly parts. Original pink wrappers printed in black. Housed in a brown cloth folding case and chemise. 26 plates by Phiz. “Our Mess Advertiser” to numbers I, III, IV, XI, ads to numbers VI and XII/XIII, publisher’s slip to numbers I, XI, XII/XIII, publisher’s ads inserted with prelims at back of number XII/XIII. Wrappers rubbed, dulled, and partially faded, wear to spine ends, contents tanned, plates browned; box starting to fray at corners. A very good set.
