First edition. Her second published novel, completed in the same year as the deaths of her brother and two sisters, set during the Luddite Riots at the beginning of the 19th century. The character of Shirley Keeldar is partly based on Emily Brontë.

Complete with 16pp. publisher’s catalogue dated October 1849 at end of vol. I; without half-titles as issued.
