First UK edition, bound with the early-state wrappers with the inked manuscript correction to the date on the front panel. The wrappered issue appeared a week before the case-bound issue in pink cloth. The American edition was published four days before the London edition on 5 January 1886. Longmans had intended to publish in December 1885, but delayed publication until January, as they feared the book would be overlooked by readers during the Christmas rush.

Octavo (177 115 mm). Full green calf by Zaehnsdorf (signed 1911), spine richly gilt in compartments, red morocco labels lettered in gilt to second and third, remaining compartments with circular onlays in red morocco to centre, covers with three-line border gilt and elaborate central quatrefoils with “RLS” monogram gilt to enclosed red morocco onlays, top edge gilt, four-line rule enclosing sawtooth roll to turn-ins gilt, pastedowns gold-painted with scalloped border and floral cornerpieces tooled in blind, free endpapers green. Bound with the original paper wrappers printed in red and blue. Spine attractively sunned to tan, front free endpaper starting at head, wrappers restored along gutter and faintly soiled with contemporary blind-stamp of W. H. Smith to rear panel. A very good copy.
