First edition, published on 31 March 1890 in an edition of 1000 copies, of which only 492 were sold; remainder copies would have most likely been bound into single volumes. Examples of the original binding are scarce, and especially so in this condition: this is the best copy we have handled.
3 volumes, octavo (180 118 mm). Original brown cloth-backed boards, spines lettered in gilt, patterned paper sides, endpapers patterned with publisher’s device. Wood-engraved head and tail-pieces. Gothic letter ink-stamp of collector Francis Stuart Burd to front pastedowns. Spines very gently rolled, light bumping to extremities as usual, corners slightly rubbed, internally the faintest of spotting to front- and end-matter, but an exceptionally sharp copy.
