SHIEL, M. P.
The Lord of the Sea.
First edition, first impression, of a key Shiel mystery in which the world’s seaways are ruled by an English farmer. This is the preferred issue with the initial blank extant. The Lord of the Sea was an immediate literary sensation, thanks to its “grandiose sweep of imagination, the vigour and inventiveness of [its] prose, and Shiel’s surreal images of obsession, hysteria, and horror” (ODNB).
