Second edition, large paper issue. One of just 50 numbered copies printed on the handmade paper signed on behalf of the printer “R & R Clark”. Originally published in 1881, the first edition seemingly sold poorly. Chatto went ahead nevertheless with this nicely produced edition, copies of which do not surface frequently. With a sequence of gift inscriptions to the front free endpaper demonstrating provenance within the Tennant and Duff families from the month of publication until 1958.

Quarto. Original white buckram, titles to spine gilt, all edges untrimmed. One or two pages lightly creased in the margins, a few more with very short tears, endpapers mildly browned, one corner bumped boards a little spotted. An excellent copy.
