[KIRBY, Charles Foveaux.]
A Forced March from My Home in Old England to My Home in the Regiment.
First and only edition, extremely uncommon: only the British Library and Princeton copies traced in institutional holdings world-wide, one copy found in auction records, in 1952. The author, an officer in the 14th Regiment Madras Native Infantry, was on leave in London when he was ordered to rejoin his regiment in Bangalore following the Battle of Sobraon in 1846. He travelled via France, Italy, Malta, Egypt and Ceylon, though the majority of his account, a transcription of his journal, is devoted to describing the architecture and antiquities of Rome. On returning to England Kirby joined the Royal South Middlesex Regiment of Militia, gazetted major in 1855.

Small octavo (172 x 106 mm). Contemporary straight-ribbed black cloth over flexible boards, yellow surface-paper endpapers. Extremities rubbed, spine chipped, joints tender, lower outer corner of rear board bumped, sporadic pale spotting and marking to margins, still a very good copy.
