Powell (1879-1958) was an American war correspondent who reported on the Western Front before being commissioned into the US army as an intelligence officer in 1917. When hostilities ceased he turned to travel writing.

Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, frame to front board in blind. With the dust jacket. Photographic frontispiece and 48 similar plates, 7 sketch-maps of which 2 full-page. Front free endpaper chipped at upper outer corner, spine very gently roll, edges lightly spotted. A very good copy in the slightly soiled dust jacket with a few nicks at spine-ends.
