NEWELL, Herbert Andrews, Lt. Colonel.
An Illustrated Guide to Places of Interest with Map.
Apparently first, ?and only, edition of this uncommon – Copac shows just NLS – little guide to Florence. During his career in India, Newell (1869-1934), who served with the Supply and Transport Corps, had been “an indefatigable traveller. Between 1905 and 1921 … he covered almost the entire country, doing several of the journeys in his trusted car – a 1913 Sunbeam, 12-16 hp” (Madras Heritage and Carnatic Music, posted 16 June, 2012) and he published a series of tour guides based on his experiences, including handbooks to Jaipur, Benares, Lucknow, Madras, and Agra. After his retirement, his Wanderlust evidently unabated, he produced a number of European guides, including “Footprints in Spain” (1922), Venice (1924), Siena (1926), and a guide to the English Church, Madeira (1931).
