MACNAUGHTAN, Sarah Broom.
My War Experiences in Two Continents.
Edited by her niece, Mrs. Lionel Salmon (Betty Keays-Young).
First edition. Macnaughtan was already a successful novelist when war began in 1914 and she travelled to Belgium to volunteer as a nurse, having previously worked in the Balkans, South Africa and London’s East End. She served courageously during the siege of Antwerp and later joined Hector Munro’s ambulance unit. In 1915 she travelled to Russia with the Red Cross “but once there found herself frustrated by official delays; her attempt in February 1916 to serve in Persia was aborted by what proved fatal illness”, and she died later that year (ODNB). Highly uncommon in this condition with the dust jacket.
