First published in 1789, continuously in print thereafter, and much loved generation after generation; “White’s Natural History of Selborne is open to everyone, for everyone has observed much of what it describes. Writer and reader each share the inheritance of the natural world, and delight in what is given, so that Selborne becomes an expression of universal thanksgiving, treasured by all” (ODNB). A very prettily presented set of this early nineteenth century edition.

2 volumes octavo (210 130 mm) Later red half calf by Rivière & Son, red linen boards, black and tan morocco labels, low flat bands with dotted roll, gilt, compartments attractively gilt with central fleuron and arabesqued foliate corner-tools, single gilt rule to the spine and corner edges, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece to each, that of volume I – “A Hybrid Bird” – hand-coloured, and two other plates. Spines perhaps a touch sunned, differential sunning on the lower board of volume II, light browning else very good.
