First UK edition, first impression. Loosely inserted is a letter by Rupert Hart Davis (1907-1999), publisher, editor and chairman of the London Library, to actor Paul Scofield (1922-2008), writing “to thank you for your exquisite reading at the Eliot evening. I shall always remember the sight of you standing in front of the Moore statue as you read with all the sympathy, music and intelligence imaginable.” The letter, dated 22 June 1965, refers to the event held at the London Library in Homage to T. S. Eliot, stepping down from having been president of the London Library after 13 years. The evening included performances by Laurence Olivier, Peter O’Toole, Paul Scofield, and Eliot’s friend Groucho Marx.
