First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author “To Mrs Jameson with very dear wishes, her friend, Blanche Roosevelt, Aix-les-Bains, 8. Sept 92” on the half-title. Roosevelt is best remembered as a soprano with the D’Oyle Carte Opera Company. She spent much of her career in France, and was personally acquainted with Sardou, as well as Gustave Doré, about whom she wrote a similar treatment, and Guy de Maupassant, who became her lover.

Octavo (175 105 mm). Original blue cloth over bevelled boards, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, green-coated endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, Spine sunned, extremities a little rubbed, occasional pencilled errata, faint spotting to front matter and margins of final few leaves. Largely unopened, an excellent copy.
