Goldziher’s findings in this article would form the subject of a chapter on the development of the Islamic sects in his Vorlesungen über den Islam (Lectures on Islam, Heidelberg: 1910), the work which, along with his highly influential Muhammedanische Studien (Muslim Studies, Halle: 1889-90), established his reputation as the founder of modern Islamic studies.
