First edition, from the collection of noted British soldier Colonel Ulric Thynne (1871-1957) and his wife Marjory Wormald. Thynne served with distinction in the Chitral Campaign, the Second Boer War and the First World War, invested CMG in 1918. “Wilkins’s best literary work was done in biography … A Queen of Tears embodied researches at Copenhagen and superseded the previous biography by Sir Frederic Charles Lascelles Wraxall” (ODNB).

2 volumes, octavo. Contemporary red half calf, red cloth sides, raised bands to spines forming compartments, second and third gilt-lettered direct, otherwise with central fleurons gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard to each volume, 47 plates. Bookplate of Ulric and Marjory Thynne to front pastedowns. Joints very slightly rubbed, foxing to page-edges occasionally encroaching onto margins, a very good copy.
