First published in 1896. William Milligan Sloane was professor of history at Princeton University, and editor of both the Political Science Quarterly and the American Historical Review. In conversation, the late John Sandler, pre-eminent British Napoleonic collector, revealed that Sloane had been the cornerstone of his remarkable collection, purchased by him at the age of 7 from a bouquiniste on the Embankment.

4 volumes, folio (302 208 mm). Contemporary red quarter morocco, spines gilt in compartments, red cloth to sides, top edges gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. Colour frontispieces and 276 plates, many of them coloured, 15 maps. Some occasional light foxing, boards marked and some rubbing to spines. A very good set.
