(HASTINGS, Warren.) GLEIG, G. R.
Memoirs of the Life of the Right Hon. Warren Hastings,
First Governor-General of Bengal. Compiled from Original Papers.
First edition. The authorized biography, described by Macaulay as “the worst book ever written.” However, Gleig had access to “the whole of the family papers,” and usefulness of the portion of these “three big, bad volumes” – Macaulay again – that consists of “undigested correspondence,” surely outweighs Gleig’s “undiscerning panegyric.” An attractive set.
